Wool Dreamers was born from the legacy of the Cabo family and their history in the Spanish wool industry. Their story begins more than 100 years ago when the family would purchase wool from local ranchers, wash it in the river by hand, and then spin and weave the fibers into blankets for horses and other agricultural purposes. As farming practices changed, the Cabo family adapted their operations and they acquired large-scale scouring and spinning equipment. These advancements allowed them to process raw wool and produce woolen spun yarns primarily for industrial rug making throughout Europe.
Wool Dreamers’ founder Ramon Cabo, is a member of the third generation of Cabos to maintain and operate the family mill. Ramon began working with his family at age 14, first learning to sort and classify wool, and eventually working to repair and run all the various machines that keep the mill going.
Through his years of work Ramon witnessed a grave shift in the textile industry, the proliferation of synthetic fibers and shift to cheaper manufacturing abroad had nearly decimated the rich traditions of Spanish textiles. Natural fibers had become so devalued ranchers no longer wanted to raise sheep for wool and changed their focus to meat and dairy production. Where there were once hundreds of mills like the Cabo’s throughout Spain, those numbers dwindled to a handful. Ramon knew that if something didn’t change the Spanish wool industry could be lost forever.
A glimpse at a way to bring new life to Spanish wool came when an independent yarn dyer approached Ramon asking for a knitting yarn made from wool sourced in Spain. Since the mill primarily supplied yarn for large carpet factories, the knitting and crochet world was completely new to Ramon, yet he immediately saw possibilities for working with small farms to uplift the value of their wool. These possibilities gave him a vision of a future where Spanish wool is once again treasured as the valuable resource it is meant to be.
Officially starting in 2020, Wool Dreamers was founded on the mission to support ranchers by paying them a fair price for the materials they produce, to bring strength to regional textile industries, and to share these incredible fibers with the world.
